Women’s Prayer Meeting Ideas

Just this morning, watching the news, something occurred to me. We Christians need to be more prayerful than ever. It seems not as many churches assemble for prayer as they did when I was younger. In my opinion, we need to normalize prayer meetings again – especially in these sinful, wicked times. As a result, I pray my women’s prayer meeting ideas inspire you to organize prayer groups. It could be with women in your women’s ministry or your circle of friends.

If you are not planning a prayer meeting for your women’s group, please consider adding it to your women’s ministry calendar. Need some help with creating one? Click here!

This type of group can morph into other women’s ministry opportunities! Maybe a Bible study group or a fellowship group can develop from your prayer meeting!

By the way, if you want a free downloadable women’s Bible I’ve designed to study, click here.

I recognize someone may read this and not realize why prayer is so incredibly necessary.

Let me share why I believe it is – no, why I KNOW it is.

For one reason, it seems the world and its standards are completely upside down.

It’s wild! Godly values that were once held in high regard are being omitted or considered repugnant.

It’s as if we are all caught in a whirlwind of confusion. Struggling and reaching to understand the chaos surrounding us all.

So much crime. There is so much dissension, weirdness, and separation.

However, we must remember that God moves when His people earnestly pray together.

I firmly believe something special happens when Christian women pray together.

Personal prayer is key to spiritual growth, and praying with other women is important for the growth of women’s ministry groups.

As I mentioned, many churches no longer hold prayer meetings.

But if you’re here, I’ll bet God put it on your heart to launch a women’s prayer meeting!

Praise God for that!

I hope I can help you plan a women’s prayer meeting that will encourage participation and create a welcoming atmosphere.

The first considerations are the group’s needs and preferences.

You MUST consider the people and give them some investment in the process.

Again, if you want women to attend prayer time, it must be meaningful for them.

Of course, it should align with scripture. I’m just saying you need to get them into the doors!

Then, you teach them.

In addition to relatable themes, choose a format that promotes engagement.

With all that said, don’t forget we live in a different age than when I was a girl.

Therefore, it is a good idea to adapt prayer meetings to this current generation. We want to attract younger Christians and not run them away before we can groom them to be prayer warriors.

As you know, prayer is a powerful tool for Christian women. In itself, it offers a direct line of communication with God, which can be life-changing.

The best part is that when women assemble to pray, a spiritual closeness develops between them, but not only that, things begin to change as they seek God’s face.

By focusing on meaningful prayer themes each week- such as dealing with cultural sin patterns, spiritual warfare, gratitude, healing, and intercession- we can provide prayer topics that matter to today’s Christian women.

Another benefit is robust discussions can emerge from the prayer time.

Success in any project often depends on the responsible party’s ability to plan.

Planning a women’s prayer meeting is no different.

So I want to share a shell of a plan you can use to plan your women’s prayer meeting.

A good model for a womenโ€™s prayer meeting is a time focused on spiritual growth, prayer, and friendship.

This outline contains timelines, an agenda, and a task list to keep the meeting organized and effective.

Activities such as group discussions, personal testimonies, and prayer partner dynamics can boost involvement and strengthen sisterhood bonds.

  • Pray to get God’s direction and blessing over your plan.
  • Choose a theme (e.g., “Strength in Unity” or “Women of Faith”). You do not need a theme, but it might be nice to coordinate your prayer efforts with a higher concept.
  • Decide how many women you will have as part of the prayer meeting. I suggest no more than 15 unless you’re doing a women’s prayer breakfast or some other type of event.
  • Will your women’s prayer meeting occur in cycles, or will it be a one-time event?
  • Choose a date, time, and location (consider morning, evening, or weekend).
  • Create and distribute invitations via church bulletin, email, or social media.
  • Layout an agenda for how the women’s prayer meeting will flow (i.e., will the women pray in groups with facilitators or in one large group? Can women write their prayers?)
  • How will you handle RSVPs?
  • Decide what resources you will need for setup, music, or audiovisual equipment.
  • Solicit 6 volunteers to help.

Note: Some womens prayer meeting ideas might include a praise and worship portion, an introduction of what the group will pray for and why, and details about the agenda or how the process will go.

  • Finalize the agenda and any scripture readings or discussion points.
  • Assign roles (e.g., greeters, worship leader, prayer facilitators).
  • Prepare materials (e.g., prayer guides, scripture handouts, notepads, pens).
  • Meet with your team of volunteers to pray to determine who will do what. You need greeters, registration/welcome, and possibly prayer facilitators for groups, set up people, and everyone cleans up.
  • Confirm RSVPs to ensure proper seating and setup.
  • Test any AV equipment, if music or slides will be used.
  • Purchase or gather supplies (decorations, refreshments, candles, etc.).
  • Pick up supplies (pens, paper, Kleenex, etc.) I am not a fan of food at a prayer meeting, but you let God lead you.
  • Set up the venue with music and Bluetooth speakers, and arrange for a greeter to welcome each woman and facilitate a welcoming atmosphere.
  • Pray over the meeting and the women who will attend.
  • Spend time praying for the event. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide the women’s intentions and protect their time so nothing unexpected will inhibit them from attending.

Now for my womens prayer meeting ideas for a sample agenda.

  • Greet attendees warmly as they arrive.
  • Briefly introduce the theme and purpose of the prayer meeting.
  • Open with an encouraging scripture or short devotional (e.g., Philippians 4:6-7).
  • Lead with a few worship songs focused on drawing hearts into Godโ€™s presence.
  • Include both reflective and uplifting songs.
  • Divide into smaller groups if needed.
  • Focus on specific prayer topics, such as:
    • Personal growth and spiritual strength.
    • Families, communities, and local needs.
    • Church leadership and global missions.
  • Use prayer prompts or scripture for guidance (e.g., Psalms or Ephesians).
  • Invite a speaker to share a short devotional or personal testimony.
  • Relate the message to the meetingโ€™s theme.
  • Provide time for quiet, personal prayer or journaling.
  • Encourage attendees to write down what God is speaking to them.
  • Pray as a group, asking for Godโ€™s blessing and guidance.
  • End with announcements or invitations to future gatherings.
  • Allow time for informal fellowship over light refreshments.

Now for one of the best womens prayer meeting ideas I could give you – a “to-do” list.

  • Select a theme and scripture focus.
  • Confirm date, time, and location.
  • Plan the agenda and structure.
  • Assign leadership roles for worship, prayer facilitation, and logistics.
  • Design and send invitations (digital or physical).
  • Promote the event on social media or church platforms.
  • Provide RSVP instructions.
  • Arrange seating in a circle or small groups for an intimate atmosphere.
  • Prepare a prayer station (optional), including candles, Bibles, and prayer cards.
  • Organize a refreshment table with water, tea, or light snacks.
  • Arrive early to finalize set-up and pray over the space.
  • Welcome attendees and provide materials (e.g., prayer guides).
  • Start and end the meeting on time.
  • Clean up and reset the venue.
  • Follow up with attendees to gather feedback or prayer requests.

When it comes to prayer meetings, I lean toward simplicity.

An empty room, soft worship music, and that’s it. That is the way prayer meetings took shape when I was a girl.

When I was a little peanut, the women of our church prayed weekly.

I used to go with my grandma.

I don’t remember much happening before the women got on their knees to pray. Wait! I do remember they sang the old song, “I Need Thee.”

It sounded very similar to this:

Isn’t that beautiful?

The women had no accompaniment and no music. It was just a bunch of older women of God crying out to Jesus. Powerful.

To this day, I like to begin my personal prayer time with that song. Believe me, I do not sound like CeCe Winans. haha

That’s how I like prayer meetings to take shape. Tell me below your memories of prayer meetings when you were younger.

But times change, so you pray and allow God to direct your steps.

Thank you so much for visiting! Be sure to subscribe. I try not to post so often that it annoys you. Who needs all those emails?

One of my goals is to post every other week.

We shall see!

Blessings, Christian Woman!
