The Role of Deacons Wives in the Church: Building Sisterhood and Services

I typically write about women’s ministry here, but today I felt led to focus on the wives of deacons. If you’re a deacon’s wife, I’m addressing you directly in this post. Then, I will talk about you. My perspective might shift a bit since my readership includes pastors’ wives and women’s ministry leaders, and I want them to appreciate the contributions you make. When it comes to church leadership, much attention is given to the deacons – especially in the Baptist church. But the women who stand beside them—deacons wives—often play an equally important role. These women provide vital support to both their husbands and the church body. However, their role goes far beyond just being a partner in ministry.

Before we continue, for algorithmic reasons, I am going to eliminate the apostrophe from the term “deacon’s wives.” In this post, you will see “deacons wives.

Deacons wives are spiritual leaders in their own right, fostering sisterhood, service, and spiritual growth within the congregation.

Deacons wives have a unique position in the churc.

I think they act as both pillars of strength and examples of faith.

As a pastor’s wife, I can also tell you they are a constant source of encouragement to me. When I’ve been at my lowest, they have sent gifts, cards, and I always get amazing hugs! I have needed every one of them, too.

They are often deeply involved in service, ministry, and supporting their husbands in their deacon responsibilities.

Very often, you will see a deacon, and you will see a wife.

I admire their synergy.

Yet, as they navigate the many expectations and demands of their role, it’s important for deacons wives to remember that they are also called to build relationships with other women in the church, too.

I think women’s ministry should include at least two deacons wives, if possible.

It’s the continuity and unity that create a great display of feminine togetherness.

Do you know what I mean?

The women in the church should be all about cultivating sisterhood, in my opinion.

This includes serving others together.

Below, I hope to give you some ideas of how deacons wives can impact their churches and build meaningful connections through service and sisterhood.

Thank you for YOUR sacrifice, Deacons Wives

I see it, I acknowledge it. Deacons stay busy.

Deacon’s wives often live sacrificial lives, much like pastors’ wives.

I know.

See, as their husbands are deeply committed to the demands of ministry, this calls them away from home and family.

This means deacons wives are often left to carry the weight of household responsibilities, care for children, and maintain the home, all while supporting their husbands in their many duties.

Their husbands are called to serve the church, often spending long hours attending to the needs of the congregation.

Deacons often visit the sick, assist the needy, organize church events, and perform other duties.

Whew!

As a result, deacons’ wives may experience moments of loneliness.

They may feel as though they are walking essentially on their own.

The worst part, I think, is that their sacrifices can go unnoticed, and their emotional and spiritual needs may be overlooked.

As a senior pastor’s wife, I know something about that.

In these moments, it’s important for deacons wives to remember that their role is vital to the success of their husbands’ ministries and that their faithfulness does not go unseen by God.

Isn’t it wonderful that the Bible offers deep encouragement for deacon’s wives? It recognizes their seasons of sacrifice.

In Galatians 6:9, we are reminded, “Let us not grow weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” This verse offers hope that the hard work and sacrifices will bear fruit in God’s perfect timing.

One more!

Psalm 34:18 assures us, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”

Even in moments of loneliness or weariness, deacon’s wives (and all of us!) can take comfort in knowing that God is near, offering His love and peace in times of solitude.

It’s also important to note that this sacrifice could be super hard for the younger wives. So, the older wives have an excellent opportunity to minister to them and encourage them.

Let’s talk more about the potential output or ministry ideas for deacons wives.

Before just jumping into practical examples, let’s first look at the scriptural foundation for the role of deacon’s wives and their call to service.

In 1 Timothy 3:11, Paul speaks to the qualifications of deacons and mentions, “In the same way, their wives are to be women worthy of respect, not malicious talkers but temperate and trustworthy in everything.” This verse suggests that deacon’s wives are to be women of high character—worthy of respect, full of integrity, and involved in the life of the church.

Additionally, Romans 16:1-2 introduces Phoebe, a deaconess in the early church, as a woman who was active in ministry. Although the specific roles of deacon’s wives were not always clearly defined in the New Testament, the support they provided to their husbands and the church was pivotal.

Wow! Deacons’ wives have more biblical references than pastors’ wives and ministers’ wives! Super cool!

You should see that deacons wives are not just passive participants in the Kingdom.

They are integral to the overall health and growth of the church.

I never thought about just how much until now.

I applaud you all, Deacon’s Wives!

We are all significant in the Kingdom, don’t get me wrong.

But I never thought much about how beautiful their role was until I wrote this.

Let’s keep thinking about this together.

One of the most powerful ways a deacon’s wife can serve in the church is by jumping into the mainstream of women’s ministry.

They can be a part of building sisterhood among the women of the congregation.

Sisterhood is essential in a church community.

Women are important for so many reasons, and we need one another.

We need a sense of belonging as well as the type of accountability sisterhood brings.

The end result: nurturing spiritual growth. Bringing women closer to Jesus.

Let me talk to you directly now.

As a deacon’s wife, you have a unique opportunity to set the tone for how women connect with each other.

Below are several ways deacon’s wives can contribute to the building of a strong, supportive sisterhood within their church.

One of the best ways to create sisterhood is through Bible study groups!

Think of it! A deacon’s wife can organize or co-lead women’s ministry Bible studies, where women gather to study Scripture, pray together, and encourage one another.

Whether in person or online, I know from experience that Bible studies give women the opportunity to grow in their faith, share their struggles, and find support from their sisters in Christ.

Example Structure for a Women’s Bible Study:

  • Opening Prayer: Begin with a prayer asking for God’s guidance as you study His word.
  • Scripture Reading: Choose a passage that focuses on Christian living, service, or spiritual growth. (For example, Ephesians 4:1-3 on unity or Galatians 5:13 on serving one another in love).
  • Discussion: Allow time for the women to share their reflections on the passage, any personal insights, and how they can apply the Scripture in their lives.
  • Prayer Time: Conclude by praying for each other’s needs and for continued growth in faith.
  • Fellowship: After the study, encourage informal fellowship where women can share and connect over coffee or a light meal.

Oh boy! Now, you are talking!

Mentorship is an effective way to build deep, lasting relationships between women of different ages and stages of life.

Deacon’s wives can play an instrumental role in fostering women’s mentorship within the church.

By pairing older, more experienced women with younger women or those new to the faith, you can create an environment where wisdom is passed down!

We need that these days!

Just as the Bible says, older women are encouraged to teach the younger women, and they are encouraged to thrive spiritually.

A deacon’s wife may not always have all the answers, and that’s okay.

No one ever does.

But her presence can offer stability and direction.

By being intentional about mentorship, you encourage the next generation of women to step into leadership roles within the church. You can groom them to replace you.

This ensures that the church’s mission continues to grow.

Example Structure for a Mentorship Program:

  • Initial Meeting: Gather the mentor and mentee for an introductory meeting. Discuss expectations, goals, and areas of growth.
  • Regular Check-ins: Set up bi-weekly or monthly meetings where the mentor and mentee can check in, pray together, and talk about faith journeys.
  • Service Opportunities: Encourage the pair to serve together in the community or church, strengthening their bond through joint acts of kindness and service.

One of the most tangible ways to foster sisterhood among the women of the church is through serving together. Deacon’s wives can lead by example, organizing service projects that meet the needs of the community. This could be anything from organizing a food drive, packing care packages for the homeless, or participating in mission trips.

Serving together helps to break down walls and foster genuine relationships. As the women work alongside one another, they are not only fulfilling Christ’s command to serve others, but they are also building lasting bonds through shared experiences.

Example Structure for a Service Project:

  • Planning: Coordinate with church leadership to identify a need in the community. This could be a local shelter, a senior center, or an outreach program for women in need.
  • Team Formation: Recruit women to participate in the project. Deacon’s wives can help rally the group, emphasizing the impact of their service.
  • Execution: Gather at the church or designated meeting place and serve together. Whether it’s packaging meals, sorting clothing, or organizing an event, the focus is on working as a team.
  • Reflection: After the project, gather together for a time of reflection, where the women can share what they learned, how they were touched, and how they can continue to serve together.

In addition to fostering sisterhood, deacon’s wives also play a significant role in encouraging women to take up leadership roles in the church.

They can provide guidance and support to help women discover and use their spiritual gifts. This includes inviting women to participate in ministry opportunities, such as teaching, hospitality, or organizing church events.

As a deacon’s wife, you can mentor and empower women to take on leadership roles in the church. Whether they are leading Bible studies, coordinating service projects, or heading up committees, leadership opportunities help women realize their potential in Christ.

Example Structure for Leadership Development:

  • Identify Leadership Gifts: Encourage women to discover their spiritual gifts through assessments or discussions. Help them realize that leadership is not just for the “called” or “appointed,” but for every woman who is willing to serve. You can Google a spiritual inventory. There are a lot of them out there. I’d link but, I haven’t found one I love yet. I think it’s because I’m certified in Myers-Briggs and True Colors. Makes me picky.
  • Provide Training: Offer training or development opportunities in church-related leadership, whether it’s organizing events, leading small groups, or being a part of the worship team.
  • Opportunities to Lead: Give women chances to lead in small, manageable areas, such as organizing a church potluck, leading a prayer group, or facilitating a Sunday school class.

Prayer is the foundation of every ministry. Duh, right?

Well, deacon’s wives can create powerful spaces for women to intercede for their families, church, and community.

I think you could also build a sisterhood among the deacons’ wives where you pray together regularly.

Prayer groups are an excellent way for women to come together, lifting one another up in times of need and celebrating victories together. I’ve written a blog post about women’s prayer groups.

Even so, here is an example structure for a prayer group:

  • Set a Time: Choose a regular time for women to meet, either weekly or bi-weekly.
  • Create a Prayer List: Have each woman write down prayer requests and keep them confidential.
  • Pray Aloud: Allow each woman to pray for others, or have a designated prayer leader guide the group in prayer.
  • Praise Reports: At the next meeting, allow time for women to share how God answered prayers and to praise His faithfulness.

Here are also some ideas from my chair:

The role of deacon’s wives is foundational to the life of the church.

Deacons’ wives are not only supportive partners to their husbands but can also be instrumental in building sisterhood.

Be sure to check out many of the women’s resources here and make them work for your deacons’ wives groups. I just know that through Bible studies, mentorship, service projects, and leadership development, you can help make sure the church is a great place for all women.
